BE-SAFE Next runs for 12 months, from September 2026 to August 2027. WP1, WP2 and WP3 start in sequence during the first three months and then progress largely in parallel, continuously exchanging risk profiles, sensing data and simulation parameters. WP4 validates the integrated approach in the field, while WP5 packages the results for reuse and policy uptake.

WP1 · Risk–Behaviour Fusion Profiles

Combines dynamic GIS and machine-learning risk maps with cyclist psychology data, near-miss typologies and risk perception. The resulting hybrid parameters will shape realistic cyclist agents in WP3 simulations.
WP2 · Advanced V2X Sensing Fusion
October 2026 – May 2027 · Lead: UPNA · Support: UPPA
Develops multisensor fusion based on ESP32/IMU devices and next-generation connectivity, low-latency data pipelines, near-miss prediction and dashboards for real-time visualisation and logging.
WP3 · Cognitive Multimodal Simulations
November 2026 – June 2027 · Lead: UniBS · Support: HES-SO
Extends the SUMO–Veins–PLEXE environment with cognitive agents informed by WP1 behaviour profiles and WP2 sensor data. It evaluates adaptive signals, haptic alerts and V2X-enabled traffic optimisation before field deployment.
WP4 · Integrated Pilots
May – July 2027 · Lead: UPNA / UBI / UniTBV
Deploys evolved sensor fleets in Pamplona (flat), Covilhã (hilly) and Brașov (mixed). Real-time near-miss and behaviour data will calibrate the simulations and validate operational TRL6 demonstrations.
WP5 · Open TRL6 Framework & Policy Toolkit
June – August 2027 · Lead: UBI · Participation: all teams and associated partners
Integrates WP1–WP4 outputs into a reusable framework containing risk models, cognitive simulations, V2X pipelines and validated datasets. The package will include protocols, demo interfaces, municipal policy briefs and routes for European-scale adoption.
