BE-SAFE Next

From data and behaviour to safer cities

BE-SAFE Next (BicyclE SAFEty powered by AI and NEXT-gen Communication Toward Cognitive Cities) builds directly on the results of the BE-SAFE Starting Grant. It combines accident risk maps, cyclist behaviour profiles, sensor data from connected bicycles and advanced traffic simulations to understand cyclist–vehicle interactions and test practical safety interventions.

The project advances the consortium’s prototypes from TRL5 (validated in the laboratory) to TRL6 (demonstrated in relevant environments). Real-world pilots in Pamplona, Covilhã and Brașov represent flat, hilly and mixed urban conditions.

How the project works

WP1 · Risk–Behaviour FusionCombines dynamic GIS/ML risk maps with behavioural and near-miss profiles.
WP2 · Advanced V2X SensingDevelops multisensor fusion, low-latency pipelines and real-time data logging.
WP3 · Cognitive Multimodal SimulationModels behaviour, sensor interactions and safety interventions in SUMO–Veins–PLEXE.
WP4 · Integrated PilotsDeploys and validates the approach in Pamplona, Covilhã and Brașov.
WP5 · Open Framework & Policy ToolkitIntegrates models, simulations, pipelines and datasets into reusable tools and guidance.

Expected outcomes

  • validated cyclist-risk models, cognitive simulations and V2X data pipelines;
  • reusable datasets, protocols and demonstration interfaces;
  • policy briefs for partner cities and guidance for municipalities and mobility operators;
  • an open framework designed for transfer to other European smart cities;
  • a foundation for larger European research and innovation initiatives.
